5. Motivating JT
Jackson Tanner Watterson the third, sauntered through the back door of the Farthing Federal Savings and Loan, resplendent in khaki Dockers and a bright yellow polo shirt. As was his custom on Monday mornings, he poured himself a cup of coffee in the break room before heading to his desk.
"Good morning, JT," Flora, the head teller, called, as he passed her station.
He smiled, showing the edges of perfectly straight and white teeth. "Morning, Flora."
Scott, the branch manager, looked up from the desk in his office. "Morning, JT," he called. "How was your weekend?"
JT stuck his head into the open doorway. "Not bad," he said. "Probably would've been better if Brittany wasn't on the road. At least, I didn't think about work."
Scott huffed. "You don't think about work, even when you're at work."
JT chuckled nervously. "Not untrue."
"JT, come in and sit down," Scott said, his expression becoming serious.
JT took a tentative step into the small office. "What did I do now?" he asked.
Scott didn't smile. "Have a seat."
The young man sat in the visitor chair and folded his hands.
Scott gazed at him for a few seconds, then took a deep breath. "JT, we're all aware of your pedigree and your family connections, which is why you get as much slack as you do."
And it was true. JT's uncle was vice-president of human resources over all twenty-four branches of the Farthing Federal Savings and Loan. His father had been a branch manager up until his sudden death four years ago. And his mother-in-law, Jane Simeon, was the assistant manager at the large flagship branch in Ross City. There was no doubt these connections had gotten the 27 year-old his position as loan officer. He understood that perhaps better than anyone. Still, he didn't like to be reminded of it. "Scott, what's your point?"
Scott shuffled some papers on his desk. "My transfer came through," he said. "I'm going to the branch in Laurelville."
This was news to JT. "I hadn't heard that. When?"
"Wednesday is my last day here," he said. "Your new manager starts on Thursday."
"We'll be sorry to see you go," JT said. "Who's the new manager?"
"Look, JT, I'm going to lay my cards on the table. Because of your uncle, I've let you get away with more than I would tolerate from any other loan officer... and our numbers reflect your lack of - shall we say - motivation. I think you'll need to be more careful with the new manager." He paused. "And, no, I don't know who's replacing me."
JT leaned forward in his chair. "Well, thanks for the advice," he said. "Is there anything else?"
"No," Scott said. He glanced out of the glass wall at the lobby, which had only one customer. "Get to your desk and at least try to look busy."
"Aye, aye, boss," JT said. He rose from the chair and left the office. He went directly to his desk and logged onto his desktop. He contemplated emailing his uncle to see who the new branch
